Our Traditional Charcoal Burn is back again for the Early May Bank Holiday, 2nd of May until the 4th.
The Dean Heritage Centre is one of the only places in the country to make charcoal using the traditional turf-and-earth clamp method. We will be open every day over the bank holiday weekend from 10:00-17:00 for you to see the charcoal burn and speak to the team of dedicated volunteers manning the burn.
Charcoal Burn Schedule
Saturday
10:00-12:00 - Building the stack
13:00 - Lighting the stack
Sunday
10:00-17:00 - All day burn
The stack is then quenched/put out overnight and left to cool
Monday
10:00 - Harvest the charcoal
The wood for our charcoal is obtained via the sustainable management of woodlands in the Forest of Dean, a traditional method called coppicing. This technique is not only beneficial to wildlife but also keeps air miles to a minimum!
The stack will be built Saturday morning, and the charcoal will be harvested midday Monday. The charcoal will then be sold in the Heritage Gift Shop in the following weeks.
Our Charcoal is easy to light - no firelighters or lighting fuel are required. Just roll up a small amount of charcoal in newspaper and then light. Once lit, add more charcoal as required. Ready to cook in 15 to 20 minutes.
