The Gruffalo Trail

We based our woodland trail on the much-loved children's book, The Gruffalo.

Join the famous mouse on a short trail by the brook. Explore carved montages that share the tale of the Gruffalo, created by Julia Donaldson.

As you walk the trail, you'll see how the mouse escapes tricky situations. You'll enjoy the great story and admire the beloved character carvings. Come along and enjoy this wonderful story with your family in the beautiful Forest of Dean. We are a woodland site with gravel paths, but the trail is suitable for buggies.

Dogs can't go on the trail since it's part of the museum grounds. But, they are welcome in the Heritage Coffee Shop, on the balcony, and in the gift shop.

Clayton Ryder, our Site Manager, carved the figures. He is also a famous chainsaw carver. You can find examples of his work around the site. He often creates new art with his chainsaw in his workshop, located at the top of our car park.

Woodland Playground

In 2023, we made significant upgrades to our Woodland Play Area. We took inspiration from our beautiful surroundings and focused on sustainability. At the end of the Gruffalo Trail, kids can have fun outdoors.

Kids can make new friends and learn skills while they play. They can enjoy the swings, monkey bars, climbing areas, slide, and sensory corner.
