The Summer Holidays have begun! Here is a list of everything happening at the Dean Heritage Centre this summer.


Free - Upcycled Crafts

When - Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00-13:00

Upcycled crafts mushrooms

Learn how to upcycle old household items into creative handmade treasures. Give everyday objects a new lease of life as you transform unwanted materials into unique crafts. From repurposed egg cartons to kitchen roll and other reclaimed materials, these hands-on activities are a fun and sustainable way to get creative and discover new crafting skills.



This activity is free and is aimed at children aged 3-10, but everyone is welcome.



Free - Pirate Wednesdays

When - every Wednesday, 11:00-14:00

Free pirate activity at dean heritage centre

Ahoy, something exciting is dropping anchor at Dean Heritage Centre this summer!

Get your pirate hats at the ready for a day of free activities.


-Make your own model pirate ship

-Test your ship's sailing abilities on the mill pond with our team of pirates

-Have a go at solving the treasure hunt trail with clues around the site

-Pirate biscuit making at Soudley Village Hall



Free - Guided Tours

When - Tuesdays and Thursdays

Get a closer look at local history with our Museum Gallery Tours, led by our knowledgeable volunteer guides.


Tours are available -

Tuesdays 11:00 & 14:00 - Booking only

Thursday 11:30 & 13:30 - Booking and drop-in




Free - Nature Crafts

When - 24th of July and 28th of August

Nature crafts forest of dean

Join Carrie to explore the woodlands on our site, where you can find materials to create nature-inspired crafts in the craft hut.


Walks - 10:00 and 11:30

Craft Sessions - 10:30 & 12:00




Free - Puppet Shows

When - 27th of July and the 1st, 3rd, 10th and 24th of August.

Join us this summer for traditional puppet shows by Glove Actually. There will be three shows per day.


Shows will be at 11:00, 11:45, and 12:15






Decorate your own fairy door

When - 31st of July 10:00-13:00

Children will be provided with a wooden fairy door to paint and decorate, £2.50 per child.

This activity is aimed at children between the ages of 3 and 10 years old, but everyone is welcome.


Choose a timeslot when booking, either 10:15 or 11:45.









Free - Make your own puppet

When - 1st of August 14:00-16:00

Free puppet shows dean heritage centre kids activities

Learn how to make your own paper plate puppet with our volunteer puppeteer, Frances, from Glove Actually.


Frances will be doing two free, fantastic puppet shows at 11:45 and 12:15 to inspire our visitors to create their own puppets in the craft hut.

This activity is aimed at children aged 3-10, but everyone is welcome.



Free - Make your own beaded windchime

When - 12th of August 10:00-13:00

After a mini nature walk, children will be creating their very own beautiful beaded wind chime. Using some natural items, beads and bells, once completed, they can be hung outside.

Bilson school log book

When - 19th of August 14:00

Free local history talk dean heritage centre

Today’s session will be suitable for all the family!


We’ll be taking a look at the logbook for Bilson School in Cinderford. The logbook records everyday life at Bilson Infants School in the late 1800s. What was school life like? What did children get up to? How different was school then compared to now?




Make your own lantern

When - 21st of August 10:00-13:00

Dean heritage centre lantern crafts

Join Carrie in the craft hut to create your own jam jar lantern.

Create a beautiful decoupage lantern. We’ll be upcycling jam jars and using beautifully decorated paper napkins and mulberry paper. 


This activity costs £4 per person, and it is aimed at children aged 8+.
