Thanks to the volunteers on the May Bank Holiday, who were in charge of the Charcoal Burn on-site. The Charcoal is now available to buy in the Heritage Gift Shop for £8 a bag.

About our charcoal

How to use it

Easy to light - no firelighters or lighting fuel are required. Just roll up a small amount of charcoal in newspaper and then light. Once lit, add more charcoal as required. Ready to cook in 15 to 20 minutes

The History of Charcoal Burning

We are one of only a few places in the country to make charcoal using the traditional turf and earth dome method, a process that we still demonstrate every year.

The wood for our charcoal is obtained via the sustainable management of woodlands in the Forest of Dean, a traditional method called coppicing. This technique is not only beneficial to wildlife but also keeps air miles to a minimum!
