Great news for history lovers and families alike! Starting from February 14th, the Dean Heritage Centre will be offering free entry to its museum and grounds as it prepares for an exciting redevelopment project. This is a fantastic opportunity to explore this much-loved heritage site while plans are underway for some significant improvements.

The Dean Heritage Centre, which has proudly served as a cultural landmark for over 40 years, is dedicated to preserving the rich history of the Forest of Dean. As an independent charity, the centre doesn't receive regular government funding and relies heavily on the generosity of visitors to maintain its collection and site. The suggested voluntary donation to help support the centre's ongoing operations and future projects is £5 per family or couple.

Opening Times

The museum will reopen for the half-term from Saturday, February 14th, and will be open daily from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. During your visit, you can explore the centre’s collection, walk the scenic grounds, follow the Gruffalo Trail, and let the little ones burn off some energy at the woodland playground. There's something for everyone!

The Heritage Coffee Shop and Heritage Gift Shop will also remain open, offering a warm welcome and a chance to grab a bite or souvenir while you enjoy the surroundings.

Exciting Plans Ahead

Thanks to generous support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Dean Heritage Centre is undergoing a period of transformation. Specialist consultants have been working hard to develop plans that will make the centre even more engaging and up to date with modern visitor expectations.

Before these exciting changes are rolled out, visitors can continue to enjoy the museum's rich collection, which covers everything from the Forest’s geology and archaeology to its medieval hunting forests, free-mining traditions, and industrial heritage. It’s a deep dive into the past, celebrating the people and stories that have shaped this beautiful corner of the UK.

Support the Future of the Centre

The Centre’s redevelopment is an important step in its mission to preserve the history of the Forest of Dean for future generations. Donations, large or small, are crucial to ensuring its continued success. Your support goes a long way in helping safeguard the heritage of this unique area.
